The Raspberry Pi is a fabulous little computer.   Inexpensive and easy to use and build projects with.    What is one of the things that has been missing from the Raspberry Pi?   The ability to easily build (no soldering!) a weather station using this fine computer.  This Kickstarter is a perfect technology project to learn all about the weather and how to sense the environment around you.  Including Air Quality and Lightning.  Right here.  Right in your neighborhood.

This Kickstarter allows you to build your own weather station with a Sky Cam to take pictures of your Sky and display them the cloud on WeatherSTEM.  You might even make it to the WeatherChannel!

The magic of this Kickstarter is that it provides all the needed interfaces and plugs to convert your Raspberry Pi into a real Weather Station.  You build.  You Learn.

Features of SkyWeather

  • Barometric Pressure
  • LIGHTNING!
  • Outside Temperature
  • Outside Humidity
  • Altitude
  • Inside Temperature
  • Inside Humidity
  • Air Quality – AQI (your own local Air Quality Sensor)
  • Sunlight
  • Wind Speed
  • Wind Direction
  • Rain
  • All your weather information on the Cloud including history

And you get all the source code for the SkyWeather software so you can do what you want.   Modify the code to your own application!  Add sensors!  Add functions!

To our honored GroveWeatherPi customers, we will be providing an upgrade kit from GWP to SkyWeather.

What about the Cloud?

SwitchDoc Labs is proud to announce our partnership with WeatherSTEM.com for taking SkyWeather to the cloud.

That’s right.  Your weather station and sky pictures will be visible to everyone on the Internet and you will be sharing your local weather with locations all  over the globe!

WeatherSTEM is an innovative cloud-based weather education platform for people of all ages and professions.   Our innovative curriculum is designed to help you and your students understand the myriad ways weather impacts just about everything in our lives.  SkyWeather is a great way to become part of the WeatherSTEM community.

What Will You Learn with SkyWeather

The educational goals for SkyWeather are:

  • Learn about the Raspberry Pi and installing software on the Pi
  • Connecting up sensors to the Raspberry Pi
  • Understanding weather sensors and how they work
  • Display your weather system on the Cloud
  • Use supplied curriculum to teach weather science

What is a Grove Connector?

The way we have been wiring I2C connections before just didn’t work for building fast and quick IOT projects.  Then we found Grove.

There are hundreds of Grove Devices from multiple manufacturers around the world.     Just for a quick look finds over 100 boards.

You can’t plug it in backwards.   If you put the connector in the wrong plug it just doesn’t work.  No smoke.  No fire. This makes us happy as we look over into our Box Of Death, filled with boards we have ruined.

We quickly found the Grove connectors and their respective cables very useful. With the large selection of Grove I2C devices available, we decided to include a Grove connector on all our future boards and products.

For more information, check out our full Grove Tutorial here.

  1. I don’t care about the cloud, all I’ve been looking for is local network access to a weather station.

    • You can use it without the Cloud. It also uses Blank and stores to a local MySQL database.

  2. So, for some, we’re kick=startering the sensors and the upgrade to the GWP system. Cool.

  3. Does the pi have to be wired into the home or the computer or is it totally self powered and wireless?
